England under Stokes have demonstrated the world that the sport of cricket is all about enjoyment.

Few recall the concluding moment of the Ashes. That initial ball that's famous. That stray ball that goes to the slips, that cover drive for four, that fallen stump, bowled him! Final deliveries? I had to research them. Moeen Ali cutting a stroke behind to finish an innings rout in a dead rubber in 2015; Rankin being caught in the slips off Ryan Harris, Rankin playing in his one and only Test at the fag-end of a quick disintegration in a comprehensive defeat that's been plentiful in 2014; a Harmison bouncer ricocheting away Justin Langer's shoulder for extras, the sole boundary the Aussies achieve in a target they'll not undertake in 2005.

It's the difference between speculating how things will go, and knowing how they do. One undeniable fact, there's no certainty there will be a successful conclusion. For the previous decade, the English visits to Australia have ended in ashes, rather than with them. Andy Flower was removed as manager after one humiliating defeat, in 2013-14, Chris Silverwood was let go after a subsequent one, in 2021-22. It's possible to form a pair of XIs out of English cricketers who participated in their concluding Test match at the tail end of an tour to Australia during the previous 25 years, and even have a several individuals over to act as substitutes for both teams.

The current English side have never claimed to be overly concerned about results. Stokes, like Eoin Morgan with the ODI squad before him, always says that whether or not a aerial shot is grabbed near the fence isn't as important as whether or not it was the proper call to play it in the first place, and in the field he's happy to clap a bowler who concedes runs so long as they are bringing the team toward taking that subsequent dismissal. But then the key rationale Stokes tried to teach his team to play this way was so they would be in a superior situation to produce the kind of cricket he thinks will perform effectively for them in Australia.

The forthcoming contest, for which they have been preparing for so long, already seems like the conclusion they cannot escape. It is this bold strategy's make or break moment. And there are an abundance of “I told you so’s” in English cricket for the team to escape criticism if they do suffer another disappointing result in the next few weeks. Stokes's approach has been based on proving everyone wrong, and the counterpart is it seems that there are many individuals who would be delighted to be shown right.

Considering this, it's a suitable occasion to highlight that the crucial matter is not only where this concludes, but regardless of whether we found pleasure along the way. A few years back, the English team were an thoroughly poor sports team. They had been defeated in four consecutive series and were lagging in the fifth one, against the Indian team, when it was postponed because of the pandemic. They had won exactly one Test match out of a series of 17, and lost 12 of them by humiliating deficits. An eight-wicket defeat to New Zealand at Edgbaston, A 157-run loss to India at the the London ground, an an innings defeat to the Australians at Melbourne, A ten-wicket loss to the Caribbean side in Grenada.

England were thrashed by the Caribbean team in the venue in the early part of 2022 just before Root stepped down as captain.

By the end, after all those stretches of testing and preventive measures and restricted environments and constant defeats at the hands of everyone they played, they were virtually the most disheartened and exhausted Test team England had ever put on to a cricket field. A great deal of what Ben Stokes and McCullum have done in the years since was in response to all that, as well as the Stokes' individual trials during his five-month break from the game in 2021 when he had experienced a bout of anxiety. It was designed to make people recall that it was meant to be entertaining, if it was intended as something.

This continues to be the case now. Even when the the prestigious contest is on the line, and even if the team have finally recognized that they need to be a slightly versatile in the way they tackle competing. Everyday life has a way of crowding in, it can be difficult to remember the insights we gain in our most difficult periods.

Here is the English squad that secured successive fourth-innings chases of three challenging targets in one summer against the Kiwis; that achieved a massive 378 to defeat the subcontinent giants that corresponding period; that became the initial visiting side to win a whitewash in the subcontinent country; that fought back to a draw after going 2-0 down in the the series; that overcame the Indian team in the historic venue off the back of one of the finest batting displays ever executed in the subcontinent, and then beat Pakistan in Multan off the back of a further exceptional performance.

Here we have the English squad, too, that managed to end up suffering a defeat in a Test by an innings even though the opposition made a modest 326; who ended up suffering a loss in one of the finer contests ever contested after making a confident decision in the opening session against the Black Caps, and then followed suit against the Aussies; who were thrashed by a massive 434 runs in the venue, and who were on the losing side of one of the Sri Lankan team's finest wins. Collectively, they have achieved some of the unlikeliest wins, endured some of the most embarrassing exits, achieved some of the most improbable centuries, and taken some of the most startling five-fers in the records of English cricket.

No matter how this prestigious tournament shakes out, they have been, in turn, astonishing, preposterous, absurd, exasperating, and completely, unapologetically, unapologetically enjoyable.
